Windows says 'Virus protection is turned off' after the August update? It probably isn't

You restart your PC, wait about four minutes, and Windows throws up a red alert: "Virus protection is turned off." Your stomach drops - did something get in? On a lot of machines this week, the answer is no. It's a glitch in Microsoft's own software, not a real problem with your antivirus.

It started appearing right after the August update. Underneath, two parts of Windows are disagreeing: Microsoft Defender is running perfectly fine - real-time protection on, scans working, threats caught - but the Windows Security Center, the dashboard that reports Defender's status, is misreading it as "off." People have noticed the alert fires at the exact same moment after every boot, one user clocking it at 4 minutes 13 seconds. That's the fingerprint of a scheduled status check going wrong, not an actual infection. Microsoft hasn't shipped a fix yet, and reports are piling up in its own forums.

So what should you do? Almost nothing, and that's the reassuring part. Open Windows Security and look at "Virus & threat protection" - if it says protection is on there, you're covered. What you should not do is go hunting for a "fix" online or call any number that appears in a pop-up. Scammers live for moments like this: a genuine, alarming Windows warning is perfect cover for a fake "Microsoft support" page that tries to install the very thing you were afraid of.
