The File History fix is here, but Windows will not install it for you

The File History bug finally has a fix, and you have to go and ask for it.

KB5124010 arrived on 22 September for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, taking them to build 26100.9550 and 26200.9550. It is a preview update, which means Windows will not install it on its own; it waits under Optional updates in Windows Update until you click Download and install. The entry that matters is one line long in Microsoft's list: an issue where File History might fail to back up or restore files to an external drive or network location. That is the failure Microsoft acknowledged last week, after people spent a fortnight discovering their backups had silently stopped.

The rest of it is a clear-up of September. Windows should now show Bluetooth accessories as disconnected when they actually are, and the audio crash with error code 0x139 is gone. Built-in cameras that stopped working in the Camera app and everywhere else are fixed. The Copilot key remap, which turns that key back into Right Ctrl or the context menu key, reaches everyone in this build rather than just testers. Smaller additions too: an Open apps maximized setting under Accessibility, a preview button for downloaded HTML files in File Explorer, and Emoji 17.

One September problem is still open. USB Audio Class 1.0 devices, meaning older USB speakers, headsets and audio interfaces, can still fail with Code 10 or produce no sound at all, and Microsoft says only that it is working on it. If you would rather not install a preview build, everything here arrives automatically with October's Patch Tuesday. Tendvane's one-click backup copies Documents, Pictures and Desktop without going anywhere near File History, which is a sensible thing to have running while that feature is being repaired.
