Windows 11September 12, 2026

Microsoft has conceded that Windows 11 Bluetooth is a mess. Nine fixes are in testing.

Anyone who uses Bluetooth headphones with a Windows PC knows the ritual. Settings insists the headset is connected. The headset disagrees. You toggle Bluetooth off and on again, and sometimes that works.

Microsoft has pushed a long list of Bluetooth repairs into the Release Preview channel, the last stop before a change reaches ordinary PCs. Builds 26100.9539 and 26200.9539 arrived on 10 September and the notes read like a summary of four years of complaints. Windows should now report the correct connection state when an accessory has actually disconnected, instead of continuing to claim it is there. The volume flyout will appear when you turn the dial on a headset during a call, so you can see what the adjustment did. The Bluetooth and devices page in Settings is meant to stop falling over while you manage devices. And the radio toggle will no longer show Bluetooth as on when it has in fact been switched off, which is the kind of bug that costs someone an hour.

The rest of the list sits deeper in the plumbing: a crash during Bluetooth audio streaming that surfaced as error 0x139, microphone compatibility trouble with Classic Audio accessories, reliability work for LE Audio headsets, and a pass over shared audio, where two people listen to the same PC. LE Audio is the newer standard that promises better sound on less battery, and on Windows it has been a dependable source of stuttering since it arrived.

The catch is timing. Release Preview means Insiders have this and nobody else does, and Microsoft has not said which monthly update will carry it out to everyone. So if your headphones are dropping out today, nothing has changed for you yet. A fair share of Bluetooth trouble also comes down to the adapter driver rather than Windows itself, and Tendvane's driver Auto-Update will tell you whether your PC is still running the Bluetooth driver it was built with.
