Windows 11 26H2 is done, and it is the least dramatic upgrade in years
Microsoft signed off this year's Windows 11 feature update on 27 August, sending version 26H2 (build 26300.9278) to the Release Preview channel ahead of a general release later in the year.
If you are bracing for an hour of "Working on updates", relax. 26H2 ships as an enablement package, which means 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 all sit on the same servicing branch. The code has been arriving in your monthly updates for months already, switched off. The upgrade is a small flag that turns it on, plus one restart. The features you will actually notice, the redesigned Start menu, the File Explorer changes, the taskbar that can now sit on any edge of the screen, mostly landed through ordinary Tuesday updates.
So why take it at all? The clock. A new version number resets your support window, and a Home or Pro machine on 26H2 is expected to keep getting security updates into late 2028 instead of running out sooner. That is the reason to accept it when it turns up in Windows Update on its own, which reporting at Windows Latest puts at late September or early October. Release Preview is a volunteer channel, and there is no prize for going first.
Waiting is the right call. The one useful thing to do meanwhile is check that Windows Update itself is in good order, because a PC that has been quietly failing its monthly patches will trip over a feature update too. Tendvane's Windows Update repair wizard is built for precisely that stuck state.
