On older Windows 10? Your OneDrive sync app stops getting updates on August 15

Here's a quiet deadline worth knowing about. On August 15, 2026, Microsoft stops shipping updates for the OneDrive sync app - the little cloud icon that keeps your files backed up - on PCs running Windows 10 version 21H2 or earlier. That means no more feature updates, no bug fixes, and no security patches for that app on those machines.

Don't panic: the app won't blink out of existence on the 15th. Your files won't vanish, and syncing may well keep chugging along for a while. But Microsoft is careful to say it can no longer guarantee syncing keeps working after that date, and "no security patches" is the part that matters most - if a flaw turns up in the app later, it won't be fixed on your PC. This is separate from the Windows 10 security updates we've written about; it's specifically the OneDrive app.

The good news is the fix is free and quick. If you're on Windows 10 version 22H2, you're already covered - OneDrive updates keep flowing to you until October 10, 2028. Only the older 21H2 (and earlier) builds are affected, so the move is simply to update to 22H2, or step up to Windows 11 if your PC qualifies. Not sure which build you're on?
