Windows 11 has finally added a No button to the OneDrive backup screen

Windows 11 has spent years asking the same question and refusing to take no for an answer. The full-screen blue panel urging you to back your folders up to OneDrive gave you two exits: agree, or "Remind me in 3 days". Three days later, or after an update, or after a reboot, there it was again. People have been complaining about it on Reddit and Microsoft's own forums for as long as it has existed.

It has changed. Windows Latest spotted a new button on the prompt on two ordinary machines running stable Windows 11 25H2: Opt out of backup. Not snooze, not skip for now. An actual refusal, and the screen is meant to stay gone afterwards.

Read what it covers before you celebrate too hard. You are declining Windows Backup, the feature that syncs Desktop, Documents and Pictures into OneDrive. It does not uninstall OneDrive, it does not sign you out, and anything already synced stays synced. Getting OneDrive off the machine altogether is still a separate job.

Take the button, but take the point behind it too. The nagging was obnoxious; the idea underneath was sound. A PC that dies with the only copy of your photos on it is a genuinely bad afternoon, and "I'll sort backups out later" is how most people lose things for good. If you switch Microsoft's version off, put something in its place. Tendvane's one-click backup copies Documents, Pictures and Desktop to a drive you pick, with no account and no subscription attached.
