Microsoft has pushed an emergency update to repair last week's update
Microsoft shipped the September updates on a Tuesday. By the following Monday it had shipped another one to undo part of what they broke.
The emergency release is not optional and it is already arriving through Windows Update on its own: KB5129195 for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, taking those to builds 26100.9457 and 26200.9457, KB5129194 for 26H1, and KB5129236 for Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 on builds 19044.7727 and 19045.7727. The headline repair is Remote Desktop Services, which had gone unstable enough that sign-ins failed and File Explorer and the Windows Update page could stop responding along with it. Also fixed: folder sharing between Windows and Linux virtual machines, and the multichannel USB audio fault we wrote about last week, where 8-channel and 3D modes stopped working on USB Audio Class 1.0 devices. An extra hardening pass against an elevation-of-privilege flaw, CVE-2026-62721, is bundled in too.
Read the gaps as carefully as the fixes. Owners of AMD Radeon cards reporting black screens and freezes, the RX 6600, RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT among them, get nothing here. Neither does anyone whose USB sound died outright rather than partially. And File History still cannot see backup drives on affected machines, which of everything on this list is the one that should bother you.
If your PC is one of the ones where Windows Update itself has been sulking since the 8th, sort that before the next patch stacks on top of it. Tendvane's Windows Update repair wizard clears the usual causes, and its one-click backup copies Documents, Pictures and Desktop somewhere safe without waiting for File History to come back.
