The Excel paste fix now covers all four versions
Two weeks after Ctrl+V stopped working in Excel, there is finally something for everyone who was affected.
Last week's fix covered Office 2016 and nothing else, and we said so at the time. Microsoft has now filled in the rest. Office LTSC 2019 wants build 10417.20208, Office LTSC 2021 wants 14334.20918, and Office LTSC 2024 wants 17932.21000. Office 2016 is still KB5002665, released on 16 September. All four undo the damage from KB5002914, the September security update that made pasting fail without saying anything: you press Ctrl+V, nothing appears, the source cells stay selected, and Excel offers no error at all. Autofill and dragging a formula down a column broke with it.
One awkward case survives. On Office 2016 and LTSC 2019, pasting into a workbook that uses conditional formatting may still fail even after the update, and Microsoft's answer is the same workaround as before: Ctrl+Alt+V for Paste Special, choose Values or Formulas, carry on. No date has been given for a proper cure.
To pull the update down, open any Office app and go to File, Account, Update Options, Update Now. The Office 2016 one is a manual download from Microsoft's site. Whatever you do, do not fix this by uninstalling KB5002914 and leaving it uninstalled, because that is the update stopping a booby-trapped spreadsheet from running code on your PC. Tendvane's app update check goes through winget and collects the programs with updates waiting into a single list, which helps for the ones that never nag. Our earlier report has the Office 2016 details.
